Edinburgh Green Space Survey Launched

To mark the start of Love Parks Week, The Council have launched a Green Space survey to get a better picture of Edinburgh residents opinions about their local parks and green spaces. If you complete the survey you have the chance to win high street vouchers and 'shopping sprees' at the Inch Nursery.

Whether you love or loathe you local greenspace, we'd encourage you to take part in the survey. You can find it by clicking here.

Weekend Garden Events

Last minute notice of two events plot holders might be interested in:

Inch Nursery plant sale: Saturday 24th between 9am - 12noon at the Council's Inch Nursery off Old Dalkeith Road. There will be a range of bedding plants available including Begonias, Marigolds, Lobelia, Petunias, Salvia and Sweet peas. Teas and coffee available.

Suntrap Open Day, Sunday 25 May between 10.30am and 4.30pm. Entry is £2 for adults and £1 for children and concessions. Proceeds are going to Perennial, the Gardeners' Royal Benevolent Society. Are You Up To The Pallet Garden Challenge?

Schools, Colleges and Horticultural Societies are being invited to take part in a 'pallet garden' competition at Gardening Scotland, billed as 'Scotland's national celebration of gardening and outdoor living'. The show is set to take place between the 30th of May and the 1st of June.

SAGS campaign highlights shortage of allotments

You may be interested to read this article, that highlights the shortage of allotments in urban Scotland. Demand is on the increase as people are becoming more concerned about the quality of their food, and the way it is produced.

We've received a number of enquiries through this website, from people looking for plots on the Ferry Road Site. So just for the record, if you would like a plot at the Ferry Road site, you need to contact the City of Edinburgh Council, and register on the waiting list with them. You will probably need to wait around two years for a plot, and it will help if you actively contact the council to 'remind' them of your interest at least once every six months. IT also helps if you can be flexible about which site you'd like a plot on too.

New Keys, New Padlock

Most people will know by now that the council Allotment officer, Ian Woolard, has replaced the pedestrian gate padlock with a new one, that requires a new key. You should already have received this key in the post from the council. This should lead to an improvement in the security of the site, as Mr Woolard is taking steps to keeping a track over who has what key, and to make sure that the keys are harder to copy.

However, please note that the padlock to open both main gates (used for letting cars in) hasn't been changed so you'll still need your old key if you want to bring your car onto the site.

What change would make Ferry Road better for you?

At the committee meeting last weekend, we had a discussion over what kinds of improvements we could make to the site. We've got lots of ideas, including building a common composting site, an common bbq/seating area, fixing up the common shed and so on. However, we thought it would be better to give everyone on the site a chance to have their say. To this end we've started a new discussion thread in the Ferry Road Forum. We'd really value your ideas, so please do tell us what changes on the site would make your allotmenteering experience better. Click here to let us know your thoughts.
